Everything necessary is provided for those who want to add a bit of spice to their lives and fill the ranks of extreme sport fans in Russia. But if going up by air, water or on land is associated with movement at a measured pace, a real thrill can be experienced by going down only.

On Two Wheels

One of the most spectacular and interesting disciplines of extreme mountain biking is downhill, or "down the mountain". An athlete takes a lift to the top and rides down a specially prepared course. The cyclist who wins the race with all obstacles faster than the others wins. As a rule, empty ski slopes are used for downhill courses in summer. Elbrus and Krasnaya Polyana are considered the most suitable areas for downhill biking in Russia. Slightly less popular are Dombai and Lago-Naki Plateau in Adygea.

Down a Snow Slope

Frosty snowy winter and a lot of mountain groups, which can be descended in various ways, made skiing popular in Russia. This sport has gained popularity in recent years thanks to high-quality slopes and modern infrastructure of ski resorts located in different regions of the country. Among the most popular resorts are Rosa Khutor in the Caucasus, Abzakovo in Bashkiria, Sheregesh in Kemerovo Region, Bolshoi Woodyavr in Murmansk Region, and other equally well-known destinations.

A few years ago, residents of Russia considered snowboarding a manifestation of extreme youth culture, but after the Olympics in Sochi, its popularity rose sharply. As a result, many cutting-edge snow parks have been created equipped according to international standards. Snowboarding fans choose ski resorts such as Abzakovo in Bashkiria, Belokurikha in the Altai, Volen, Iksha, Snezh.com, Sorochany or Novoperedelkino in Moscow Region, Moroznaya Mountain in Kamchatka, Sobolinaya Mountain in the Altai, Igora in Leningrad Region, Sheregesh in Kemerovo Region, and many others in different parts of the country.

In comparison with mountain skiing and snowboarding, ice cross downhill is a very young, but no less exciting sport. Wearing the hockey gear, athletes go down the ice chute, trampling and turning. They start in groups of four, and the winner is the one who reaches the finish line first, which is quite difficult at an average speed of 40 kph. In Russia, the Federation of Ice Cross Downhill holds competitions in this sport in different regions of the country, including Moscow and St. Petersburg, and also provides training for professional and amateur sportsmen.

Jumping into the Void

You can do BASE jumping, or extreme jumping from fixed objects using a special parachute, right in the capital of Russia. The favorite object for this is one of the skyscrapers of Moscow-City — the golden 350-meter-high Mercury tower. It was built recently and lured extreme sport fans from the Ostankino TV tower. However, not only courage and equipment are required for such a jump, but also the permission of the building management company.

In Kamchatka, another type of parachute sport is popular, which is skydiving, where free fall is prolonged due to opening the parachute as close to the ground as possible. On the peninsula, tours are organized, during which you can jump with a parachute over active volcanoes. They say that you can feel the heat of the steam coming out of the crater during the jump.

Down the River

Rafting is one type of extreme descent, but on the water. It has several levels of difficulty, and rafting can take an hour, or a whole day, or even a few days depending on the skill level and desire of the sportsmen. A lot of bravery and courage is required to navigate down the mountain river, making its way through its rapids, turns and other obstacles on a raft or a frameless pontoon boat. Especially if they are severe rivers of Eastern Siberia, Karelia, Altai or the Caucasus. Despite its unpredictability, or rather thanks to it, they have become popular rafting places in Russia.

Desire and perseverance on the way to the goal will help to reach new heights when practicing extreme sports in Russia. But keep in mind: even despite good physical fitness and special equipment, such sports are associated with great risk to your health and life.
