Active Recreation

Or Extreme Activities Available in Russia

The number of fans of outdoor activities in Russia is constantly growing, and at the same time, its new types are emerging. The natural and climatic conditions of Russia allow you to do almost any kind of tourism practically in any conditions at any time of the year.

Here is a famous quote: "There's no Russian who doesn't like to travel fast!" Naturally, this statement is not true for everyone: there are Russians who like to quietly lie on the beach. But the number of active leisure fans is constantly growing, simultaneously with new trends emerging. The natural and climatic conditions of our country allow us to practice almost any type of tourism in any conditions at any time of the year, and this provides a great "creative freedom": even the most experienced people can make their dreams come true in the field of extreme tourism, independently or using travel company services.

Water Element

The presence of a variety of water bodies — oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and bays, in different natural conditions of Russia already implies not only fishing, but also water skiing, sailing (yachting) and surfing (riding on the boards along the waves). One of the surfing varieties is especially popular now, the SUP surfing, or stand up paddle surfing. An interesting water sport is wakeboarding, which combines elements of water-skiing slalom, acrobatics and jumps. There are wake bases at large reservoirs in Moscow Region, for example, at Pirogovskoye or Ivankovskoye, in cities that are located on large rivers like Rostov-on-Don, and of course, in the seaside cities of Sochi, Gelendzhik, and Anapa. You can conquer the waves riding a jet ski, as well as taking part in football, racing or freestyle on the sea surface.

If you provide yourself with a scuba and a wetsuit, fins and a mask, you can go scuba diving and get into the secrets of the underwater world or go fishing underwater. Many mountain rivers in Russia are suitable for rafting using canoe or special rafts. In recent years, kayaking, which is solo paddling in a small Eskimo boat, has become one of the popular recreation activities. This sport has three main types: whitewater kayaking, freestyle and rowing slalom. The most popular places for whitewater kayaking are the rivers of Karelia, the Caucasus and the Altai Mountains.

Up and Forward!

Rock climbing classes will present an opportunity to check your endurance and willpower, and standing on a mountain top in the Crimean, Caucasus, Altai, or the Urals or other mountains of Russia you will feel like a subjugator of the world. Incredible sensations can be experienced by going down from the mountains on skis or doing one -snowboarding- types: free skiing, heli skiing, ski-touring, etc. Individual rocks, located above the sea, are suitable for cliff diving, which is jumping from natural heights. Where unavailable, you can simply jump into the water from any extreme height, and this will be called high diving.

Being in the mountains, you can go depthward and go caving, for example, take a trip down one of the complex underground routes through the undersurface mountains, rivers, lakes and waterfalls. But to do this you need special equipment, including a powerful flashlight with spare batteries and warm, practical clothes that you don't mind mucking. For lovers of extreme leisure jailoo tourism is also interesting, where you can forget about the comforts of home for some time and live with one of the indigenous peoples according to their customs. In the very north of Russia, for example, jailoo tourists can communicate with people of local nationalities, turn into nomads riding dog-sleds, spend a night in a chum (raw-hide tent), and try making traditional clothes from reindeer skins.

For Tech Fans

Auto, motorbike and bike tours, as well as travel on foot, can become extreme if the chosen route passes through deserts, steppes, swamps, rivers, forests, mountain slopes and other tough terrain. Extreme sport fan clubs organize trophy raids throughout Russia — in Karelia and Tatarstan, Primorsky and Stavropol Territories, in the hot southern Krasnodar Territory and in subarctic Murmansk Region. But if instead of traveling on a motorcycle you are supposed to perform jumps with acrobatic stunts on it, then it is already called motor freestyle.

Equestrian tourism is developed in the Southern Urals. You can learn to ride a horse at one of the camp sites and go on a one- and multi-day tours along the mountain trails in the region.

Hang gliding and riding hot air balloons, as well as parachute jumping, all represent an extreme trend in the air. You can choose any kind of parachuting from classics, formation skydiving and canopy relative work to parachute-athletic multi-sport events. Kitesurfing can also refer to the extreme air sport, as it uses movement on the surface, where the pulling force carrying the tourist is created with the help of a kite. Using such a vehicle, you can ski on the snowy plain, in the mountains, and even over a frozen pond.

So, in Russia, there are lots of ways to spend a vacation in an active and extreme manner, raise adrenaline in the blood, tickle your nerves, and get unforgettable experience, as well as achieve new sports results. Everyone will choose an activity to enjoy or come up with a new one.
